[Links] [Local Page] [Writings] [My Art] [Family]
this is my local page, it has all the info Im sharing about my town and local area plus links to local stuff. check it out! I live in a coastal town in Maine. its a tourist town and is almost 10 times the population in the summer. we have a lighthouse and two beaches, long sands a 2 mile stretch of sandy beach and short sands a small patch of beach in town. there are two more small beaches that cater to the locals. there is several areas which make up 'the York's' there is the York village, York beach, cape neddick, York harbor, and York. its not a large town by any standard but its a family destination and has a home town feel. we are about 10 miles from new Hampshire to our south. our town still has that typical Maine community feel to it. we also have a thriving commercial fishing community here. we have many lobsterman working out of our harbor as well as draggers, party fishers, gill netters and many pleasure boaters and one of the best diving opportunities around at nubble point (lighthouse). there are no franchises allowed in our town per town charter so we have all local businesses. from restaurants serving local seafood and vegetables to at least a billion antique shops. there is a zoo and amusement park with carnival rides, and a small tourist driven business district on the beach at short sands. we also have our own fist rate hospital. most of York is rural, a little more than half of York is in the mountains just east of the beach area. since there are so few of us here in the winter, we get to know most people in town if not well at least by name. our town is like a little island that time forgot in some ways. while the towns around us have most every amenity. including franchise restaurants. we are only about an hour and 15 min out of Boston, so day trips are possible. also we are only 2 hours from many ski resorts in the area, and only 2 hours from the white mountains and lake winipasaki. most people either love it here or hate it here, i moved here some 25 years ago from the hustle and bustle of suburban life and have never regretted it. just down the road over the piscatiqua river that separates Maine from new Hampshire is Portsmouth, anything you want can be found here. most of us here in town do most of our shopping there, from malls to supermarkets and bars, and shops of any conceivable type. its got a college town type of feel and attracts people from all over the place. we get ALOT of snow in the winter and its cold as hell. the summers are like Florida, hot with warm nights. and a nice cooling breeze off the water in the evenings. and lots of sunshine. in the winter there's allot of storms that bring snow and rough seas. in fact the north Atlantic is one of the most dangerous and unpredictable maritime experiences. in fact though they were from glauster, the guys from a perfect storm were outside of my area here when they got in all of that trouble and died. seas here can be very violent and it can come on without warning. its a bitch to have to shovel off snow or beat off ice off of your boat so it doesn't get top heavy and roll over. the port in Portsmouth serves every kind of ship but container ships, in fact Portsmouth naval shipyard services nuclear submarines for the military.
